H&R investigations Flashcards
Locard’s exchange principle
traces can be left suspect bring something with him and leaves with something from the scene
what is transfer
when 2 things come into contact information is exchanged
what are some conditions affecting transfer
pressure, # of contacts, time since contact, length of contact, transferability
what is persistance
how long will a piece of trace evidence will stay on a surface
what does a forensic scientist do
examine evidence and report on it
why is evidence recovery important
it can contaminate the evidence and nothing can help if that happens
what is physical evidence
is real evidence from the crime scene, physical
what is augmented evidence
is diagrams, demonstrations, not physical evidence from crime scene
is all evidence created equal
no depends on context, quality and amount of evidence
what is the end goal of analyzing physical evidence
Identification and comparison analysis
what is trace evidence used for
investigation aid (leads), association (linking a person to person or to a scene), reconstruction (remaking scene)
what is transferred material
where material is transferred between 2 surfaces (fiber transfer)
what is pattern evidence
where a pattern is left on a surface (GSR, BPA, fracture)
what is cross transfer
where evidence 1 and 2 exchange evidence between one another
can a lot of evidence be found in secondary and tertiary transfer
not the more transfers the less evidence is found
