Pain: definitions and terms Flashcards
Pain def.
Unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual/potential damage, described in terms of such damage
Nociception
The transduction, conduction, and processing of noxious stimuli
Algesimetry
measurement of pain, including pain threshold, intensity and tolerance
Neuralgia
pain caused by prolonged irritation of neural pathways leading to pathological impulse generation
Causalgia
pain associated with traumatic nerve injury
Chronic pain
pain that persists for more than 3 months
Hyperaesthesia
oversensitivity of mechano/thermo systems to non-noxious stimuli
Hyperalgesia
oversensivity of nociceptive system to noxious stimuli
Allodynia
pain associated with response of the nociceptive system to non-noxious stimuli
Analgesia
complete absence of pain in response to noxious stimuli
local anaesthesia
complete block all modalities of sensation arising from a restricted region of the sensory surface
general anaesthesia
complete block of all modalities of sensation
