Pain and thermosensation Flashcards
Pain can be classified into 3 forms, what are they?
Nociceptive
Inflammatory
Pathological
What are nociceptors?
Peripheral sensory afferent neurones that are normally activated by intense stimuli that are damaging
Which neurones are responsible for pin transmission?
A delta (Thinly myelinated)
C fibres (Unmyelinated)
Sub classification of A delta fibres
Type 1(HTM)
Type 2
Sub classification of C fibres?
C-MH
C-M
C-H
C-MiHi
Where do primary cell bodies terminate?
Centrally in the spinal cord dorsal horn in laminae of Rexed
Where are the soma of the sensory neurones in the trigeminal system located?
Trigeminal sensory ganglion
What is the primary neurotransmitter in the dorsal horn?
Which receptors does this target?
Glutamate
AMPA and NMDA receptors
Which peptides are responsible for assisting in transmission?
Substance P
CGRP
Describe peripheral sensitization?
Mediated by nociceptors
Primary hyperagesia
Requires ongoing periph pathology for maintenance
Major role in heat
Describe central sensitization?
Secondary hyperalgesia
Pain that persists after tissue healing
Mechanical sensitivity
What is visceral pain?
Pain perceived at a distance from the affected organ
What is viscerosomatic pain?
Sharp and well localised
Inflamm exudate from diseased organ contacts somatic structure
