Neuroanatomy 1 Flashcards
What is the diencephalon?
Thalamus + Hypothalamus
What are the functions of astrocytes?
- Support
- Maintenance of blood brain barrier
- Environmental homeostasis
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
Produce myelin in CNS (Not in PNS)
What shape are oligodendrocytes?
They have numerous branches that surround multiple axons.
What is the function of microglia?
Similar function to macrophages- Immune monitoring and antigen presentation.
What are the function of ependymal cells?
Cilliated cuboidal/columnar epithelium that line ventricles
What is a folium?
The equivalent of a gyrus, but on the cerebellum
What does grey matter consist of?
Huge number of neurons
Cell processes
Synapses
Support cells
What does white matter consist of?
Axons (Mostly myelinated) and their support cells
Name the layers of meninges from superficial to deep
Dura mater
Arachnoid mater
Pia mater
What is the enteric nervous system?
The nervous system found in the digestive system from the oesophagus to the rectum
Where do the dural venous sinuses drain into?
The internal jugular vein
