Pain and Inflammation Flashcards
Redness from localized inflammation is caused by?
vasodilation
Swelling from localized inflammation is caused by?
plasma leakage into extracellular space
Pain from localized inflammation is caused by?
prostaglandin irritation of nerve endings and pressure of edema
Acute Pain
Sudden pain, short lived, usually caused by injury
Chronic Pain
Longer than 6 months, difficult to treat
What is a nociceptor?
sensory nerve that initiates pain transmittion
What is Somatic Pain?
Sharp pain, usually in skeletal muscles, ligaments, and joints
What is Visceral Pain?
Dull, throbbing, aching, usually in smooth muscles and organs
What is Neuropathic Pain?
burning, shooting, numbing, usually caused by injury to nerves
What is Gate Control Theory?
Using other stimuli to stop the experience of pain
What are the therapeutic effects of acetaminophen?
fever and pain reduction (does not reduce inflammation)
What is the method of action for acetaminophen?
elevate pain threshold, inhibits pyrogens in the brain (blocks formation of prostaglandins in the CNS)
What is the brand name of acetaminophen?
Tylenol
Is acetaminophen a non-opioid analgesic, or an NSAID?
non-opioid analgesic
Contraindications to acetaminophen?
sever liver or kidney disease (metabolism)
Maximum dose mg/day of acetaminophen?
4000 mg/day
What can increase effect of acetaminophen?
caffeine
What does caffeine do when dosed with acetaminophen?
Increases effect
Sxs of acetaminophen intoxication?
N/V and GI cramping
clotting times increase
hypoglycemia
abdominal pain
jaundice after 3-5 days
What is the antidote for acetaminophen intoxication?
acetylcysteine (NAC) but must be given within 24 hours (8 hours recommended)
What is an NSAID?
drug used to treat pain, fever, and inflammation
What is brand name of acetylsalicylic acid (ASA)?
Aspirin
MOA for ASA?
inhibiting enzymes COX-1 and COX-2
Therapeutic effect of ASA?
pain reduction
inflammation reduction
fever reduction
decrease platelet aggregation
Contraindications for ASA?
Children (especially if flu/cold sxs Reye’s syndrome)
Pregnancy
Renal or hepatic failure
GI bleeding/ulcers
Side effects of Aspirin?
GI bleeding
Tinnitus
Can you take ASA with other NSAIDS?
No
