Pain Flashcards
What does the limbic system do in pain
responsible for emotional aspects + response to pain
What does the Anterior Cingulate Cortex do
helps w learning about pain and remembering how it was
What happens the nociceptors the more you feel pain
they get more sensitive
What is the pain-spasm cycle
loop of pain followed by a spasm (stress induced)
Some concequences of stress
respiratory- shortness of breath cardio increase hr, Bp digest- nauseua, stomache ache immune- impaired musc.- tightness, lower cordination
Pre modern paradigm of pain
pain is part of life, somthing that should be endured
Biological paradigm of pain
Nerves sending mssges to brain, treat disease/ injur and pain will subside
Contemporary paradigm of pain
Complex interaction that incorporates many parts of the brain
What is pain threshold influened by
perception influenced by motivation/exectationa
tolerence influed by psyc and environment
Fast pathway of pain (A)
fibres that connect dirrectly to thalmus then sensory + motor pathways in cerebral cortex
Slow Pathways of Pain (C)
limbic system- message for u to slow down
Gate control theory( Melzoch)
The spinal column contains a neural gate that can either be opened ( allowing perceptions of pain) or clossed
Sensory mssg travels to brain
Processed in brain in context w mood state, state of attention, prior experiences
Brain then respondes if it wants to close the gate
Neuromatrix theory of pain
Brain encodes a body image which creates a sense of our boldily self and the brain continous to interpret signals/sensory info
5 cognitive responses of injury (Bad)
- Catastrophizing- exaggerating severity
- Overgeneralization- extending impact to unrelated things
- Personalization- taking undue personal responsibility
- Absolute thinking- ‘ Now im worthless’
- Selective abstraction- attaching specific aspects of injury that have little meaning
Why do people take risks
team influence, goal sit., position on team, self pressure, sign of weakness.
