How many athletes RTP when physically able to
44%
History of injury as a negative ex
- focused on anxiety/depression/helplessness
- then stressors/ responses
- ideas of hardiness, resilience, motivation
- not sport growth/ emotinal disclosure
Hope theory
Cognitive perception of belief in ability to reach goals
need ability to initiate actions and come up w ideas to get there
Stress related growth (SRG)- two main influences
perceptions of positive change that can propel indv. to higher level of feeling
Emotional support + positive reframing
Transcontextual theory
Explains transfer of motivation from one context (performance) to another,
Sport injury related growth
Those who experience adversity during rehab + have accsess to/use resources are more likely to experience SIRG
5 Dimesiongs of Post traumatic growth
- social (compassion/ closeness for others)
- Cognitive ( feeling stronger, self assured)
- Emotional ( more relaxed, better at expressing feelings)
- Physical ( change in lifestyles)
- Spiritual ( appriciation for life)
3 Determinants of post traumatic growth
1- personal characteristics- motivation, goal orientation
- Characteristics of event- controlability, time out
- Environment- SS lvls, amount of resources
Organismic value theory and what are the 2 responses
- When exposed to a stressor, event shatters what you thought life would be and u have to recalibrate
either Assimilate- assess injury and fit it in w what u need to do
or Accomidate- assesment comes out negative, leads to distress
Some ways to facilitate positive consequences from injury
- recognize it takes time
- different strats can be used
- avoid secondary victimization ( now u can focus on..)
- View as challenge
- reframing may not occur immediatly
