Pain Flashcards
What sympathetic responses can accompany acute pain?
increased HR/BP pupillary dilation sweating hyperventilating anxiety
A patient with fibromyalgia complains of burning/aching pain. What might you tell them about this, in regards to why this may be happening?
they are experiencing a central neurogenic pain response; d/t CNS involvement
- however recall that this is musculoskeletal pain, just likely with a CNS component
Central thalamic pain can occur as a result of a CVA to what area?
ventral posterolateral thalamus
Compare central neurogenic pain vs peripheral.
central = d/t injury/disease to a component of the CNS
peripheral = d/t mechanical/chemical damage to peripheral nerves
Hyperanalgesia and allodynia are symptoms of what type of pain?
central neurogenic pain
What is complex regional pain syndrome?
disorder that develops after an injury to a body part, resulting in regional pain disproportionate to injury
What are characteristics of CRPS?
1) allodynia (pain on light touch)
2) cool skin, swelling, edema
3) thin/pale/cyanotic skin in middle stage
4) late stage fibrosis
Herpes zoster is caused by inflammation of what structure?
posterior root ganglion of affected spinal nerve
What disorder is characterized by well-defined, highly sensitive trigger points?
myofascial pain syndrome
- a subset of peripheral neurogenic pain that’s musculoskeletal
A nonarticular reheumatic disease of unknown origin with widespread pain, as well as tenderness of muscles/soft tissues is known as what?
fibro
