Cranial Nerves Flashcards

1
Q

How do you test the optic nerve?

A

CN II

  • eye chart (testing visual acuity: near/far)
  • visual fields (for homonomous hemianopsia)

Q

What are the responsibilities of CN V?

A

trigeminal

  • motor to muscles of mastication (temporal, masseter)
  • sensory to forehead, cheek, and jaw

Q

Describe the different roles of CN IV, VI, and III

A

trochlear (IV), abducens (VI), occulomotor (III)

  • IV = turns adducted eye down
  • III = turns eye up, down, in
  • VI = turns eye out

So think of triangle: pointing to eye tested

  • up and out, top of test = 3
  • out, point of triangle = 6
  • down and in, end of triangle = 4

A

CN XII

17
Q

How do you test for the hypoglossal CN?

A

stick tongue out

18
Q

What side does the tongue deviate to (weak or intact) if it protrudes and deviates? What CN is indicated?

A

deviates to side of weakness

Q

If a patient has dysarthria, what CN may be affected?

A

CN XII
