Pain Flashcards
What receptors sense pain?
Nociceptors
What are nociceptors?
Sensory neurones - free nerve endings in tissues which are sensitive to damage or potentially damage. Connected to the central nervous system m
What can activate nociceptors?
3 types of stimulus:
-Thermal (temperature)
-Mechanical (stretch/strain)
-Chemical (pH change as a result of local inflammatory process)
Which tissues have very little nociceptors?
Inside the brain
Mucosal layer of stomach
Articular cartilage
What are the two types of fnerve fibres and the difference in their speed?
Myelinated - fast
Non-myelinated - slow
At what point is pain considered chronic?
After 3 months (according to the NHS)
What is somatoc pain?
What is visceral pain?
Pain of internal origin, from or around internal organs.
Pain receptors are less in number so pain presents over a diffuse area, often presents as referred pain
What is neuropathic pain?
Pain originating from the nerve itself, not the tissues surrounding it.
“Neuralgia” can be described as burning, tingling or shooting pain amongst other descriptions. Can be triggered by temperature (usually cold), light touch, slight movement. Pain can be constant or felt in “flare-ups”
