Infection Flashcards
What are the 5 types of microorganisms?
Bacteria
Fungi
Prions
Protozoa
Viruses
What are prions and can they become harmful?
Proteins that naturally occur in the brains of animals and people, normally harmless but when misshapen can cause devastating illnesses
Do human cells have cell walls?
No
Which of gram positive and gram negative bacteria are aerobic or anaerobic?
Both can be either
Which kind of bacteria are more resistant to antibiotics?
Gram negative due to a thicker cell wall
Do fungi cells have walls?
Yes, rigid and multilayered made of polysaccharides
What makes fungi prolific?
They can withstand wide temperatures and grow in low oxygen environments
What are the drawbacks to antifungal medications?
Many antifungal meds used to treat systemic infections are toxic to the host as fungal cell composition is similar to human cells
What type of pathogen is most common?
Viruses
What features of a virus capsid aid it?
Protection and ‘stickiness’ allowing it to bind easily to membrane bound proteins
What are some common antiprotozoal medications?
Metronidazole/tinidazole
Nifuratel
Sodium stibogluconate
