Pain Flashcards
what does nocicpetion mean
the capacity to detect and reason to noxious stimuli
what are noxious stimuli
stimuli strong enough to threaten the body’s integrity
what is in the lateral pain system
lateral thalamic nuclei, primary and secondary somatosensory cortices (SI and SII)
what does the somatosensory cortex do in the lateral pain system
pain localisation
what cortex in the lateral pain system is used for pain localisation
the somatosensory cortex
what is in the medial pain system
frontal cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, ínsula
what does the frontal cortex do in the medial pain system
motor inhibition, attention supervision, scheme retrieval
what does the anterior cingulate cortex do int he medial pain system
emotion, memory, attention, response selection
what does the insula do in the medial pain system
alerting sensory integration
what are some factors that influence between-individual differences in terms of pain
sex, ethnicity, personal characteristics
what re some factors that influence within-individuals variation in terms of pain
situational factors, automatic evaluation (pre-attentive processing of salient features in the environment)
how do personality characteristics effect someones experience of pain
locus of control, self-efficacy, neuroticism
what is the locus of control
Locus of control refers to the degree to which individuals believe they have control over events in their lives. It can be internal, where individuals feel in control of their own destiny, or external, where they believe external forces dictate their outcomes.
what is self-efficacy
