Q

What are the minimum weather conditions required at an airport to list it as an alternate?

A

For a Precision approach: 600 ft ceiling and 2 SM visibility. For a Non-precision approach: 800 ft ceiling and 2 SM visibility. If no instrument approach is available, ceiling and visibility must allow descent from MEA, approach, and landing under VFR.

Q

What are the GPS considerations when filing an alternate?

A

If equipped with a non-WAAS GPS, the flight plan can be based on GPS approach availability at either the destination or the alternate, but not both. WAAS without baro-VNAV allows filing based on LNAV or circling minima at the alternate. WAAS with baro-VNAV allows LNAV/VNAV or RNP 0.3 as the basis for the alternate.
