erant in ea legione fortissimi viri, centuriones,
There were in that legion very brave men, centurions,
qui primis ordinibus appropinquarent,
who were of the type to approach the first ranks,
Titus Pullo et Lucius Vorenus.
Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus.
hi perpetuas inter se controversias habebant,
These men had endless disagreements between themselves,
quinam anteferretur,
as to who should be preferred,
omnibusque annis de locis summis simultatibus contendebant.
and they competed every year about promotion with the greatest quarrelling.
ex his Pullo, cum acerrime ad munitiones pugnaretur,
Of these, Pullo, when there was very fierce fighting at the fortifications,
‘quid dubitas,’ inquit, ‘Vorene?
said, “Why are you hesitating, Vorenus?
aut quem locum tuae pro laude virtutis spectas?
Or what [better] opportunity for praise of your courage are you looking out for?
hic dies de nostris controversiis iudicabit.’
This day will judge about our disputes!”
haec cum dixisset, procedit extra munitiones,
When he had said these things, he advanced outside the fortifications,
quaeque pars hostium confertissima est visa irrumpit.
and he charged into the part of the enemy which seemed [to be] the thickest.
