Stem Cell Potency
Totipotent, Pluripotent, Multipotent,
Unipotent
Stem Cell Therapies (pros & cons, ethical concerns)
Advantages - stem cell therapy can help enhance the growth of new healthy skin tissue, enhance collagen production, stimulate hair development after incisions or loss, and help substitute scar tissue with newly developed healthy tissue.
Distadvantages - Embryonic stem cells can have high rejection rates, Adult stem cells have a determined cell type, Obtaining any form of stem cell is a difficult process, Stem cell treatments are an unproven commodity and Stem cell research is a costly process.
induced Pluripotent Stem Cells
iPSC’s are adult stem cells that have been genetically reprogrammed to an embryonic stem cell-like state; this allows the cell to express genes and factors which are characteristic of embryonic stem cells. iPSC’s are considered to be pluripotent as they are capable of generating cells from all 3 germ layers.
Uni potent
Cells that can only differentiate into one type of cell, that is found in a specific tissue, but that can divide repeatedly. Skin epidermal stem cells are unipotent as they are only able to give rise to new skin cells.
Multipotent
Cells that have the ability to give rise to multiple, but limited, cell types.
Pluripotent
Cells which can differentiate into any of the 3 germ layers, are found in the blastocyst.
Totipotent
Cells that are capable of giving rise to any cell type or even another embryo. Totipotent stem cells are found in the zygote.
