Page 3 Flashcards
What do chromosomes contain?
Genes
A single chromosome may contain hundreds of genes.
How does the size of a chromosome relate to the number of genes it carries?
The bigger the chromosome, the more genes it carries
What is a gene?
A section of chromosome that codes for a protein through the order of the nucleotide base sequence
How do genes code for proteins?
DNA contains information encoded into its base sequence
What is the role of genes in protein production?
Genes contain coded instructions for joining specific amino acids into proteins
What is the genetic code in DNA?
Triplet code (three bases)
How many amino acids can one piece of genetic code specify?
One amino acid
What is the first step of gene expression?
Transcription
What occurs during transcription?
Production of mRNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase
What happens to the DNA molecule during transcription?
It unwinds and separates
What does RNA polymerase bind to during transcription?
Promoter of the template strand
What is synthesized during transcription?
An mRNA molecule through complementary base pairing
What happens when transcription stops?
mRNA produced detaches and moves from the nucleus to the cytoplasm
What is the first step of translation?
Ribosome binds to mRNA
What does the ribosome do during translation?
Matches tRNA anticodon sequences to the mRNA sequence
