First trimester summary
Adaption to environment
Establish midline - can move head away from and back to midline. Can bring hands to midline and to mouth
Has firm grip
Can lift head in prone and take weight through arms
This enables use of vision and gives basis from which to move out into space and away from babies body
First trimester warning signs
Total patterns of flexion or extension Poor variety in movement No grasp No smile Head is persistently to one side No bringing hands to midline or to mouth
Second trimester summary
Combination of flexion and extension against gravity with easy interaction between the two Dissociation between two sides of the body Beginning rotation Building up of tone and stability Can get hands to feet in supine Can roll Can sit alone when propped Has developed head and trunk control Ready to move
Second trimester warning signs
Poor head control when propped No reaching in supine No pushing in prone No bringing up legs in supine Adduction and internal rotation of the legs Persistent Motor reaction Excessive floppy ness or stiffness
Third trimester summary
Can sit independently Starts to crawl Moving in and out of sitting Pulls to stand Stands with support
Third trimester worrying signs
No rolling or rotation
No arm support
Inability to get up from prone
No balance in sitting
Fourth trimester summery
Improved proximal stability -Hand function balance reactions Manipulation Movement variety Grading of movement into gravity Cruises Develop balance in standing Problem solving in new situations
