A-E Differences between Adult and Paediatric

A

A - smaller, softer, funnel shaped, larger tongue, different alignment
B - nasal breathing as babies (feed so much need to breath simultaneous), diaphragmatic breathing
C - higher HR, mottle when hot
D - verbal or not, mobility changes depending on age

  • Viral Infection - treat symptoms - respiratory support, feeding support

  • Red Flags - lethargic (not waking for feeds), cyanosis, pale, mottled skin
  • Risk - premature, cardiac babies, down syndrome, complex medical hx

  • 1-2 (cough/cold), 3-5 (worst period)
  • Head bobbing, goat noises/grunting, intercostal recession, reduced feeding, fever, widespread wheeze/crackles

A
  • Inflammation of upper airway, leads to subglottic narrowing
  • Most common upper respiratory infection
