Paediatrics Flashcards
What must you consider with a child patient
- must be in the presence of a parent/legal guardian
- shorter consultations (shorter health history and attention span)
- Include child in discussion
- give child time to answer
- do not talk over the child
How would you adjust supplement dosages for children?
Breastfeeding Infants: dose mother
Under 2: Fried’s rule
(age in months / 150) x adult dose
2 or above: Young’s rule
Age of child / (age of child + 12) x adult dose
Why is GIT health important for children?
Digestive tract is less developed (more sensitive)
(Avoid harsh protocols e.g. anti-Candida or enemas)
Lower micro biome diversity linked to increased risk of obesity, T2D and chronic inflammation
High microbiome diversity linked to healthy nervous system & brain development
How can different births impact a baby’s microbiome
Vaginal - picks up mothers microbiome in transit through the vaginal canal
Caesarian - avoids this transmission
Assisted birth - pressure from forceps can interfere with cranial bones and nerves. Impacting breastfeeding and jaw development
What is infantile colic
Regular prolonged crying in a healthy infant, with an unknown cause.
What are signs/symptoms of infantile colic
Infant appears in pain, crying for long periods
Stiff body / curls legs upwards
Occurs within weeks of birth, resolves by 3-4 months of age
What are causes of infantile colic
Under developed digestive system
Trapped gas
Food intolerances
Low microbiome diversity
Over stimulation
Emotions of parents if they’re distressed
Natural remedies for colic
Burping baby for as long as it’s fed
Maternal & baby probiotics
Gentle pressure on abdomen (tiger hold or over shoulder)
Gentle bicycling of baby’s legs
Warm bath
Fennel / Chamomile tea
Checking intolerances in breast milk/formula
Avoid gas forming foods
Remove excess stimulus
Check parental stress levels
