Packet Definition
Data sent as a container over networks
Packet Switching Process
Passes through multiple routers
Router uses recipient address on a packet to determine where to send it
Header contains
Hop limit
Senders address
Receivers address
Port number
Tail contains
Checksum or similar error checking
Routers
Sends packet through the fastest possible route
Hold tables with frequently used routes to certain devices to enable max performance
Gateways
Enables communication of different protocols
Strips away headers etc to leave payload
Gives new sender and receiver addresses to comply with the new protocol
FQDN
Domain that specifies exact resource and can only be interpreted one way
DNS server
Assigns a FQDN to its own IP output
