Networks Flashcards
Physical topology meaning
actual architecture of a network
Star Network Pros
Packages sent directly to client, reduced data collisions + increased security
easy to add/remove clients
failure of one cable/client doesn’t mean the failure of all of them
Star Network Cons
If central hub fails, all of the networked fails
Expensive to install due to the amount of the cable required
Bus Network Pros
No central hub reducing the chances of failure and decreasing set up cost
Cheap to install
Bus Network Cons
Clients can see all the data sent through the singular cable
Risk of data collisions
if backbone fails so does the whole system
Logical network topology meaning
Refers to the flow of data packets through the network
Wireless netowrking
clients communicate without physical connection via a WAP and a wireless network adapter in the device that connects to the wireless network
Wireless Security Methods
WPA
SSID broadcasting
MAC address whitelisting
WPA meaning and explanation
New clients must enter a password to join the network
SSID Broadcasting
Service Set IDentifier tells client the network is available
Disabling means only devices that know SSID can join
MAC address whitelisiting
Devices contain unique MAC addresses
Whitelist created of allowed devices with their Mac addresses
hence no one else can join
CSMA/CA with RTS/CTS protocol
Transmitter checks if the channel is idle
Waits a random amount of time if not
Sends RTS
If CTS not received then waits a random amount of time and process restarts
If CTS received then data is transmitted
Why is RTS/CTS needed?
Sometimes transmitting device can’t “see” some parts of network where communication may be occuring
