P8 - forces in contact Flashcards
What is distance?
How far you have traveled
What is displacement?
How far you are now from where you started ( displacement is distance in a certain direction
What is the difference between scalar and vector quantities?
Scalar only has magnitude whilst vector has magnitude and direction
What is Newton’s third law?
When two object interact with each other they exert equal and opposite forces on each other.
What is Newton’s first law?
When the forces acting on an object are balanced, the result force is zero
what is the center of mass?
the point located at the object’s average position of all the particles of mass that make up that object.
how do you work out moments?
force x distance from pivot.
a large gear will have a …?
larger moment and turn slower
what does a low gear have?
-low speed
-high turning effect
what does a high gear have?
-high speed
-low turning effect
what is the formla for pressure in hydraulics?
force/ area
force 1/ area 1 =?
force 2/area 2
what is equilibrium?
in equilibrium the resultant force acting on the object is zero
