P8 - Forces Flashcards
displacement
-distance without change of directionq
vectors
-physical quantities that have size + direction
eg of vectors (6)
-acceleration
-momentum
-displacement
-force
-weight
-velocity
scalar
-physical quantities that have size only
eg of scalars (5)`
-speed
-distance
-time
-mass
-temp
magnitude
size of quantity
vector =
magnitude + direction
scalar =
magnitude
arrow in vector
-direction
-size = magnitude
force
push or pull that acts on an object due to its interaction with another object
contact forces
-must touch to interact
-eg friction
non contact forces eg
- magnetic force
-electrostatic force
Newton’s 3rd law of motion
-when 2 objects interact,
-they must exert equal and opposite forces on each other
driving force
push or pull
resultant force
-single force that has the same effect as all other forces
if resultant is 0 then
forces are balanced
How to work out resultant force
-calculate difference of all acting forces
Newton’s 1st law of motion
-if forces acting on an object are balanced,
-the resulatnt force is 0
Impact of newtons 1st law of motion
-stationary = stays at rest
-moving = constant speed and same direction
when resultant force is not 0
-movement depends on size and direction
Resultant force is when 2 unequal and opposite forces act
-size = difference of forces
-direction = larger force
free body force diagram
-shows forces acting
-replaces object with a point
-shown by arrow vectors
