P15 - Transformers Flashcards
transformer
changes size of alternating PD from 230 v to battery pd
step up -
increases size of alternating PD
step down
decreases size of alternating PD
how it works
2 coils of insulated wire
-both wound aorund iron core
why is iron used
easily magnetised /demagnetised
primary coil
connected to ac supply
secondary coil
as ac passes - alternating pd is induced here
why is alternating pd induced
ac passes through primary coil
- generates alternating mg field in iron core
- lines of alternating mg field in core pass through secondary coil
- mg in secondary induces alternating pd
if secondary coil is attached to bulb in a complete circuit
- induced pd
= ac so bulb lights up
energy is transferred from
primary to secondary
-despite not being electrically connected
practical transformers
only works with ac
- with dc - no change in mg field so secondary ac is 0
step up - coils
more turns in secondary than primary
step down - coils
- more in primary than secondary
formula for Vp/Vs =
Np/Ns
if 100% efficient formula
P PD x P I = S PD x S I
