P5 Flashcards
What do vector quantities have
Magnitude and direction
What do scalar quantities have
Only magnitude
Give examples of vector quantities
Force, velocity, displacement, acceleration, momentum…
Give examples of scalar quantities
Speed, distance, mass, temperature, time,…
What is force
Force is the push or pull on an object that is caused by it interacing with something
Contact force?
When two objects have to be touching for a force to act
Noncontact force?
When they do not need to be touching for a force to act
Gravitational force?
Is the force of attraction between masses
What is the difference between mass and weight
Mass is the amount of ‘stuff’ in an object whilst weight is the force acting on an object due to gravity
What is the resultant force
Is the overall foce on a point or object
What happens when a force moves an object through a distance
Energy is transferred and work is done on the object
What does it mean when an object is in equilibrium
All the forces on it are balanced
What is acceleration
How quickly you’re speeding up
What is the gradient in a distance time graph
The speed
What does friction do
Slows things down
What does drag do
Increases as speed increases
Newtons first law ?
If the resultant force on a stationary object is zero, the object will remain stationary. If the resultant force on a moving object is zero, itll just carry on moving at the same velocity
Whats newtons third law
When two objects interact, the forces they exert on each other are equal and opposite
What is momentum
Its maniky how much ‘oomph’ an object has
The total momemtum before an event is thesame as what?
The same as after the event
What is distance
How far an object has moved
What does displacement measure
The distance and direction in a straight line from an objects starting to finishing point
