P4c-safe Electricals Flashcards
What is current?
The flow of electrical charge around a circuit
What is current measured in?
Amps (A)
What is voltage?
The driving force that pushes the current round
What is voltage measured in?
Volts (V)
What happens if you increase the voltage?
More current will flow
What happens if you increase resistance?
Less current will flow
What is resistance?
Anything in the circuit which slows the flow down
What is resistance measured in?
Ohms (♎️)
What is the equation for resistance?
Resistance= voltage/ current
What colour is the livewire and what does it do?
Brown
Carries the high voltage
What colour is the neutral wire and what does it do?
Blue
Completes the circuit
What colour is the earth wire and what does it do?
A safety wire to stop the appliance becoming live
Give examples of resistors
Longer wires
Thinner wires
What is a fuse?
A circuit breaker
Why don’t double insulated applied need earthing?
Their casing is non conductive and cant become live
How does a wire fuse reduce the risk of a fire if the appliance develops. Fault?
- big current flows through live wire, through case and out down the earth wire
- fuse blows and wire inside melts
- circuit breaks
- prevents flex overheating and fire
- prevents further damage to appliance
Whats the equation for power?
Power= voltage x current
