P3e-Energy on the move Flashcards
What does kinetic energy depend on?
The mass and speed of an object
What is kinetic energy?
Energy of movement
What happens if you double the speed?
If you go twice as fast, the braking distance must increase by a factor of four to convert the extra kinetic energy
What are petrol and diesel made from?
Oil which is a fossil fuel
What environmental problems can burning fossil fuels cause?
Acid rain and climate change
What are biofuels?
Biofuels are alternatives to fossil fuels which are made from plants and organic waste and are renewable
What are electric cars?
Vehicles which use large batteries to power electric motors
What are solar power cars?
Vehicles that have solar panels which change the energy from the Sun into electricity to power the motor
What are the arguments for the use of electric cars?
- They dont release any pollution at the point of use when theyre driven
- solar panels could reduce overall Co2 emissions from vehicles.
What is the argument against the use of electric cars?
- The power stations which produce the electricity do pollute since they burn fossil fuels.
- they are expensive to make and buy
- limited performance compared to fossil fuel cars
How do bio fueled cars reduce pollution in their production?
The plants which are grown to make the biofuel also take in Co2 when they’re growing
What is fuel consumption?
The amount of fuel used
What does fuel consumption depend on?
- The size of the engine
- how the car is driven
- the mass of the car
- the speed
- road conditions
What effect do roof boxes and open windows have on cars?
It increases fuel consumption because it increases air resistance and drag
Why do heavier cars have higher fuel consumptions?
To move a car, the energy from the fuel needs to be changed into Kinetic energy. The higher the mass the higher the kinetic energy. So you will need more energy from the fuel to turn into kinetic energy
