P4. Waves Flashcards
What is a wave?
A wave is an oscillation that transfers energy
What is the difference between an electromagnetic wave and a mechanical wave?
A mechanical wave needs matter to travel through
What type of wave is a sound wave?
Longitudinal
How would you describe a longitudinal waves movement?
Vibration of air molecules is in the same direction as the wave, forward and backwards
What is the direction of a transverse wave?
Vibration is at right angles of the direction of the wave
What does amplitude mean?
Distance from middle to the top/crest or distance from the middle to the bottom/trough
What does wave length mean?
Distance from one point on a wave to the same point on another wave ( measured in meters)
What does frequency mean?
Number of waves or oscillations per second ( measured in hertz Hz )
What type of wave are electromagnetic waves?
Transverse
What speed do electromagnetic waves travel at?
300,000,000 metres per second ( in a vacuum )
What is a vacuum
A volume which contains no matter
What are the 7 types of electromagnetic waves?
Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible light, Ultra violet, X-rays, Gamma Rays
What is the order for the waves?
Radio, Microwave, Infrared, Visible, Ultra violet, X-rays, Gamma
Which has the longest wavelength?
Radio
Which has the shortest wavelength?
Gamma Rays
Which has the lowest frequency and energy?
Radio
Which has the highest frequency and energy?
Gamma
Which colour has the highest lowest frequency?
Red
Which colour has the highest frequency?
Violet
What is an electromagnetic wave?
Oscillating electric and magnetic fields
How do you know electromagnetic waves are transverse?
They oscillate at 90 degrees to the direction of the wave
What do electromagnetic waves transfer energy to?
An absorber
What is the use of UV, X-Ray and Gamma rays ( different )
UV - Kills bacteria in water
X-Ray - Kills skin cancer cells
Gamma - Kills cancer cells and bacteria on food
But what are some drawbacks of: UV, XRay and Gamma
UV - can damage DNA in skin
XRAY - Damage cells and cause cancer
Gamma - Damage or kill cells in body
