More common to develop. psychologists are interested why they seem to disclose more n develop intimacy sooner.
Absence of gating mechanisms
Some factors which act as a filter irl aren’t there in VR. Such as physical attractiveness, speech defects, age group are avoided Jude to lack of face to face encounter.
Red. cue theories
Computers lack features of face to face communication e.g. non verbal communication such as facial expression. May result in ppl reading too much
Anonymity
Deindividuation results in red. of feelings/ responsibility. -> inhibition loss. Ines can say things online they wouldn’t irl. Can lead to closeness n intimacy. But also to sexting n trolling
Hyper personal model (Walther 1996)
Ppl can manipulate their identity n control interaction to display a hyper honest or hyper dishonest ver. of themselves
AO3: Pew research on online dating
P= 20p American ppts surveyed. F= online dating is becoming more acceptable. W 53% agreeing ‘dating allows ppl to find a better match for themselves as they can reach to more.
But 54% of internet daters felt someone else seriously misrepresented themselves in their profile.
What does the inline dating research suggest:
Internet is a way to over come gates by meeting more, able to know them via self disclosure of personal interest.
But the hyper personal model is taken advantage of by some producing a dishonest ver. of themselves
