P3: Duck’s Phase Model Of R Breakdown Flashcards
How does Duck express his view on R via this Model
Sees breakdown as a series of phases,
each w a threshold, once threshold breached then they move to next phase
Breakdown isn’t a catastrophic event , instead a process so isn’t inevitable
The phases of breakdown:
Breakdown Intra-psychic Dyadic Social Grave dressing
Breakdown phase (not named in spec)
P becomes distressed/dissatisfied
Threshold: ‘I can’t stand this anymore’
Intra-psychic phase
Considering whether ur better off out of R.
Ind won’t say anything to their P.
Some may end theR here
T: I’d be justified in withdrawing
Dyadic phase
Confrontation of P. Talking ab feelings n potential future Anger/guilt may surface, other P may also have concerns. Discuss ab costs if R ended R can be saved if both P motivated T: I mean it
Social phase
Feelings are public, friends & fam aware
No longer pretending but reconciliation is harder.
T: it’s now inevitable
Grave-dressing phase
Once R over, Ps justify their actions
This is done to present themselves attractive for future Ps.
GD may inv stories of betrayal.
T: time to get a new life
AO3: + real world application
Model can help couples understand why a R broke down.
May help the, get over the B.
Model can help when going through first 2 stages to repair R, e.g. focus on good aspects & clear communication
Would help prevent B for those who is yet single
AO3: -retrospective & self reported data
Most research is retrospective ( p may remember details incorrectly/have a bias)
Data is often self reported-subjective, unscientific
AO3:I&D - culture bias
Mainly applies to ind. Cults- where a B is inds choice regardless of its effect on wider groups.
But in Coll. Cults a R n it’s out come could be the fams choice
So R won’t go through Ducks phases
