P3 : Idiographic Vs Nomothetic Flashcards
Idiographic:
Recognition of uniqueness
Use of subjective experience
Individual case to understand behaviour rather than to formulate general laws
I; Type of research method
Qualitative: it’s focus is on gaining insight into human B by studying Indy’s in depth rather than gaining numerical data from many.
Use of unstructured interviews, case studies n thematic analysis
I: example:
Humanistic approach. Ind is unique n there’s no attempt to compare to a larger group.
Freud:every pax he studied were uniquely analysed n Freud took v in depth notes on each px.
Nomothetic:
Inv study of a large group n seek to make generalisations or develop laws ab their B.
Uses objective knowledge
General laws of data so ppts can be compared.
Future B can be predicted/controlled
N: Type of research method
Quantitative
Based on numerical data that can be categorised.
E.g. statistical significance analysis from large groups personality/ IQ tests used to diagnose abnormal B
N:example
Biological approach
Basic principles of how the body n brain works
Can be gender biased
AO3: I + data Coll.
Prov rich n meaningful data, e.g. interviews.
Often case studies e.g. HM these provide us w data to gain in depth understanding. E.g. mental illness
AO3: - i scientific methods
Lacks scientific method.
E.g. Freud made generalisations from one specific case study e.g. Little Hans
AO3:N +procedures of experiment
Use of standardised procedures, can assses for lvls of val & rel .
Gives psychology greater scientific val. through these approaches psych can stand as a science
AO3: N - risk of losing
There’s a risk of losing a whole person e.g. if we know there’s a risk of having mental illness.
Doesn’t actually tell us much ab what it would de like to have a Disorder
Human experience is minimised.
