P3 - The Motor Effect Flashcards
What happens when an electric current is passed through wire?
A magnetic field is produced when an electric current flows through a wire.
When could electromagnets be used?
In scrapyards to lift heavy metal.
Why does the wire experience a force when current flows through the wire when between two magnets?
A magnetic field is produced by the wire. The magnetic field of the wire interacts with the magnetic field of the magnets.
Which way does a magnetic field flow?
North to south.
How can you increase the force experienced by a wire when current flows through it between two magnets?
Increase the current. Use stronger magnets to produce a stronger magnetic field. Increase the area of the coil.
Which way does current flow?
Positive to negative.
Why does side B experience no force?
Because the current is parallel to the magnetic field.
Which fingers are which in Fleming’s left hand rule?
Force - Fumb
Field - First finger
Current - middle finger
