P3 Particle Model of Matter Flashcards
What is density?
How compact mass is for a material or object.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid and gas.
What is the name of the process that goes from a solid to a gas?
Sublimation.
What is the name of the process when a solid turns into a liquid?
Melting.
What is the name of the process when a liquid turns into a gas?
evaporation/boiling.
What is the name of the process when a gas turns into a liquid?
condensing.
What is the name of the process for when a liquid turns into a solid?
Solidification/freezing.
Describe a solid.
Particles in regular lattice arrangement and vibrate about fixed positions.
Cannot be compressed.
Describe a liquid.
Particles have no regular arrangement and are able to move past each other.
Cannot be compressed.
Describe a gas.
Particles are far apart, move randomly at fast speeds (high energy).
Can be compressed.
Why is energy needed for melting/evaporation?
energy must be supplied to overcome the Electrostatic forces of attraction between particles.
What is internal energy?
The sum of kinetic energy and potential energy of all particles in a substance. Only one can change at a time.
What is specific latent heat?
The amount of energy required to change the state of 1kg of a substance.
What is the particle theory of gases?
By heating a gas, you increase the particles’ kinetic energy, meaning they collide more frequently and with a greater force: there is an increase in pressure.
What happens to pressure and volume is gas is compressed at a constant temp?
Pressure and volume are inversely proportional.
