P1 Energy Flashcards
What is the law of the conservation of mass?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed.
What are the different energy stores?
Kinetic energy, Gravitational Potential energy, Elastic potential energy, Thermal energy, Chemical potential energy.
What is specific heat capacity?
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of an object that is 1Kg by 1 degree Celsius.
What is the energy transfer in a rollercoaster?
At the top it has GPE but when the cart reaches the bottom, it has more Kinetic energy than GPE.
What is a closed system?
no energy is transferred to or from the surroundings.
What is power?
The rate of energy transfer. Measured in Watts (W).
What is efficiency?
the proportion/ratio of total input energy that is converted to useful output energy.
How is thermal energy usually lost in buildings?
Conduction transferring energy to the outside surroundings.
How can thermal energy be kept in buildings?
Through the use of insulation. E.g. cavity walls, double glazing.
What are the two types of energy sources?
Finite/non-renewable and renewable.
What are examples of finite sources?
Fossil fuels such as coal, oil & natural gas and Nuclear fuel such as uranium.
What are examples of renewable sources?
Wind power, Hydroelectric, Solar power, Geothermal, Tidal, wave, biofuel.
