P3 Energy Rescources Flashcards
How are energy demands mostly met
By burning oil, coal and gas
What other fuels are used to meet our demands of energy
Biofuels, renewable energy and nuclear power generate some enegy we use
What’s used as the fuel in nuclear power stations
Uranium and plutonium
How does the amount of energy released of 1kg of uranium and plotonuim compare to fossil fuels
Uranium and plutonium relases mcuh more energy
Are biofuels recyclable
Yes
What are two examples of biofuels and what can they be used for
Methane and Ethanol
Can be used to generate electricity
What’s a wind turbine
An electrical generator on top of a tall tower (hill)
How do waves generate energy
By turning a floating generator
How do hydroelectricity generators create electricity
They are turned by the water that flows/runs down hill
How does tidal power stations generate electricity
They trap each high tide and uses it turn generators
What are Solar cells
Flat solid cells and use the Sun’s energy to generate electricity directly.
What do solar heating panels use the Sun’s energy for?
To heat water directly
Where does geothermal energy come from
The energy transferred by radioactive substances deep inside the Earth.
What happens in a geothermal power station
Water is pumped into hot rocks underground, which produces steam to deprive turbines at the Earth’s surface that generates electricity
What do fossil fuels promote
The level of greenhouse gases, which could cause global warming
What do nuclear fuels produce, as waste
Radioactive waste
What are some advantages of renewable energy resources
The resources will never run out
Don’t produce harmful waste products (e.g greenhouse gases and radioactive waste)
Can be used in remote places
What are some of the disadvantages of renewable energy resources
They could cover large areas
Can disturb natural habitats
Can be noisy and costly
What are the 4 different ways energy resources can be evaluated in terms of?
Reliability, environmental effects, pollution, and waste
What can gas-fired power stations and pumped-storage station meet a variation in?
Demand
What are issues with nuclear power stations
Expensive to build, run and decommission.
What an issue woth carbon capture of fossil fuels emissions?
Likely to be very expensive
What is an issuse with renewable resources
Cheap to run, but expensive to install
What sort of station/resources are likely to be needed for future energy supplies?
Nuclear power stations
Fossil fuel power stations that use carbon capture technology
Renewable energy resources
