P3 Flashcards
What are the fossil fuels?
Gas
Oil
Coal
How are fossil fuels used?
Extracted from ground or sea bed
Transported to oil refineries and power stations
Is nuclear fuel non renewable?
Yes can be replaced
What happens is most fossil fuel power stations?
Burning fossil fuels heat water in a boiler.
This produces steam
The steam drives a turbine that turns an electricity generator.
What is a bio fuel with example?
Is any fuel taken from living or recently living organisms.
Animal waste is a example
Give examples of biofuels
Biodiesel- uses waste veg oil and plants like rapeseed
Other are ethanol (from fermented sugar cane), straw, nutshells, and woodchip
A biofuel is:
Renewable (regrows or is continually produced like rubbish)
Carbon- neutral- in theory the carbon that the organism takes in from the atmosphere as carbon dioxide can balance the amount that is released when a bio fuel is burnt
What is nuclear fuel?
Taking energy from atoms
What is the fuel in a nuclear power station?
Uranium or
Plutonium
What is a wind turbine?
An electrical generator at the top of a narrow tower.
What does a wave generator do?
Uses the waves to make a floating generator move up and down. This turns the generator and generates electricity.
A cable between the shoreline and the generator delivers electricity to the grid
