P3 Flashcards
What is hydroelectric power
This is energy generated from rainwater collected by a reservoir flows downhill. The flowing water drives turbines that turn electricity generators at the bottom of a hill.
What is biofuel energy
Methane gas is used for small gas-fired power stations
Biofuels are taken from any living or recently living animal
It’s renewable and carbon-neutral
What is wind power
This is an electric power generator at the top of a narrow tower
Power decreases as wind decreases so they are unreliable
What is hydroelectric power
Collected in a reservoir and flows downhill which drives turbines that turn electric generators at the bottom of the himm
What is solar power
It’s useful in small amount of energy needed such as watches or calculators. Expensive to buy but costs nothing to run. Lots are needed but they’re not reliable as no sun means no power
What are solar heating panels
It’s can head water using mirrors to reflect sunlight onto the water, water is turned into vapour, it’s then piped into the ground and the turn into electricity, the mirrors are controlled by computers to track the sun
What is geothermal energy
Comes from radioactive substances deep within the earth and the radio active substances heat the surroundings rock towards the earths surface
Can be built in volcanic areas were water can be pumped down and produce steam and convert to electricity
What’s the advantages and disadvantages of fossil fuels
Advantages: reliable and can form a lot of energy, abundance, cheap and versatile
Disadvantages: release CO2 and are non-reliable
What’s the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy
Advantages; never runs out, doesn’t produce CO2 ur radioactive substances
Disadvantages: can’t meet demands and can effect environment
What is supply and demand
Dena d for electricity varies. The variable a demand for electricity is ent by nuclear power stations gas-fired power stations using renewable resources
