P2.3.1 - Stretching springs Flashcards
What are elastic bodies?
Objects that return to their original shape when the deforming force is removed
What are plastic bodies?
Objects that do not return to their original shape when the deforming force is removed
What is the limit of proportionality?
The point beyond which extension is no longer proportional to force
What is elastic limit?
The force beyond which an object does not return its original shape when the force is removed
What is Hooke’s Law?
The extension of a body is directly proportional to the force applied as long as the limit of proportionality is not exceeded
What is spring constant?
It tells you how stiff the string is or how difficult it is to stretch
How do calculate the spring constant?
force exerted by a spring(N) = spring constant(N/m) x extension(m)
