P2.2.4 - Newton's Second Law Flashcards
What is Newton’s Second Law?
‘’The acceleration experienced by a body is directly proportional to the resultant force acting upon it, and in the same direction as’’
What is the relationship between acceleration and mass?
Acceleration is inversely proportional to mass
What is the equation linking force, mass and acceleration?
Force = mass x acceleration
If a body is travelling at constant speed, in a constant direction is it accelerating or not?
It is not accelerating
If a body is travelling at a constant speed, with a changing direction is it accelerating or not?
It is accelerating
If a body is travelling at a changing speed, with a constant direction is it accelerating or not?
It is accelerating
If a body is travelling at a changing speed, with a changing direction is it accelerating or not?
It is accelerating
If a body is moving in a circle at constant speed then…
- It is constantly changing direction
- Thus, it is constantly chasing velocity
- Thus, it us constantly accelerating and so must be subject to a resultant force
