P2.2.1 - Forces and interactions Flashcards
What is Newton’s Third Law?
‘’When 2 bodies interact, they exert a force upon each other that is equal in size, but opposite in direction’’
What is the unit for force?
Newtons (N)
What is a force?
A push or pull that acts on an object due to the interaction with another object
What are non-contact forces?
A force produced because an object is in a field
What are contact forces?
A force that only acts when objects are in contact
What are some examples of non-contact forces?
- Magnetism
- Gravity
- Electrostatics
What are some examples of contact forces?
- Friction
- Drag
- Upthrust
- Tension
Is weight directly or inversely proportional to the mass of an object?
Directly
What is friction?
Friction is the resistance to motion of one object moving relative to another
What is drag?
A force that acts opposite to the direction of motion of a body
What is upthrust?
The force on an object in a fluid due to the difference in pressure if the fluid acting on the area of the object
What is tension?
When solid bevy’s deform slightly when you exert a force on them
State in one way in which the force of gravity is different to the electrostatic force?
The force of gravity is only attractive but electrostatic forces can be either attractive or repulsive
Explain why the force of water resistance is greater than the force of air resistance?
Water is denser than air as it has more particles than air, so more polar tickles collide and interact exerting a greater force of resistance
