A charged atom, only electrons can be transferred to and from atom. Some objects are more attractive to electrons than others, if u rub a balloon with a woolen jumper, some of the electrons will be transferred from the jumper to the balloon leaving the jumper positively charged and balloon negatively charged

A
Like an industrial version of rubbing a balloon on a jumper, transferring electrons from one place to another, it was originally used to accelerate electrons to a very high speed
