P2-Solar and Wind power Flashcards
What is passive solar heating?
is when energy from the sun is used to heat something directly
what lets heat and light get absorbed into a room?
glass
when things that are heated in a room, why can’t they escape through glass?
because they emit infrared radiation which has a longer wavelength meaning it reflects of the glass
how do solar water heaters work?
they work like the passive solar heating except they get absorbed by black pipes to heat up the water
what causes convection currents to produce wind?
energy from the sun heats the atmosphere
what do wind turbines do to create electricity?
they convert the kinetic energy into electricity, the wind turns the blades which turns a generator
Advantages of wind turbines…
cheap to run, tough and reliable and wind is free, doesn’t produce polluting waste, its renewable
Disadvantages of wind turbines…
you need 1500 turbines to replace one coal-fired power station , spoils the view and noisy, wind sometimes isn’t fast enough, expensive to set up
