What should you write in the ethos paragraph ?
Write about who you are, why the audience should listen to you and why the point you’re making is important.
What should you write in the logos paragraph ?
Back up the previous argument in the ethos paragraph with facts and statistics and also expert quotations.
What should you write in the pathos paragraph ?
Try and appeal to the readers emotions by using real-life stories and considering what the future will hold if they don’t do what you’re suggesting.
What should the conclusion of your argument hold ?
What specifically you actually want people to do in light of what you’ve said.
What advanced structural features can you include ?
Paragraphing to control space - different sized paragraphs to change the pace, cyclical structure, and starting/ending with an anecdote - to add a sense of emotion throughout the argument.
What mature viewpoint phrases could you use for the ethos paragraph ?
‘From the point of view of a (…)’ or ‘We live in a world where…’ use them to sound more profesional.
What mature viewpoint phrases could you use for the logos paragraph ?
‘On a national scale, this means that…’ or ‘Economically,…’ or ‘Statistically, the evidence speaks for itself, as…’ looking at the bigger picture and creating an opening to actually include numerical data.
What mature viewpoint phrases could you use for the pathos paragraph ?
‘The implications for the future are clear:…’ or ‘The example of (…) shows us that…’ or ‘In light of this, only one conclusion is possible:…’ opening up oportunities to speak about the future and also state explicitly what you want the audience to do.
What format should your writing be in for a speech ?
Address the audience at the start, and intermitently refer to the audience or venue and end with a personal request to the audience members.
What format should your writing be in for an article ?
Inlcude a dramatic title (in the present tense), and refer to the readers and what they think, and end with asking and then answering a question on the original topic.
What format should your writing be in for a letter ?
Initiate it with an appropriate greeting (make sure it matches who it specifies in the question), refer to the act of them reading the letter, and end with an appropriate sign-off.
When would you use a minor sentence ?
To focus the reader - works well at the start of a piece. (only one or two words long)
When would you sue a short dramatic sentence ?
To change the pace of the piece - stopping the story or speeding it up.
What is a question used for ?
To prompt the reader to re-think their own opinion and somtimes to set up for your own answer to it.
When would a single line of dialogue be appropriate ?
Only occasionally to back up a point in the logos or maybe ethos paragraph - for expert quotations.
