The fiction paper.
What should you do before reading any of the questions ?
Spend at least 10 minutes reading the text - write a couple word to summarise each paragraph.

How the language and atmosphere changes at key points.
How long should you spend on each reading question ?
1 minute per mark plus 2 minutes to plan - Q1 quick(5mins), Q2+Q3 8 marks = 10 mins, Q4 20 marks = 22 mins, Q5 40 marks = 42 mins.
What is paper 1 question 1 about ?
Finding four things that we learn.
How should you start the answer to paper 1 question 1 ?

What is paper 1 question 2 about ?
Language.
How should you start the answer to paper 1 question 2 ?
The writer uses language to present (question word) as… (can include technique in topic sentence).
How would you zoom in on a key word/technique in questions 2 or 4 ?
In particular, the word ‘…’ suggests/implies…
What is the key to a clear explanation in questions 2 or 4 ?
Explain ideas using as or because.
Easy ways to gain higher marks in language questions ?
Consider several interpretations of a word - possibly, perhaps, this could also, alternatively. Link to abstract bigger ideas.
What is paper 1 question 3 about ?
The structure (order of events in a story).
What parts of the text do you focus on for question 3 ?
Beginning, middle and end (or any significant changes in the focus of the text).
5 key structure techniques for question 3 ?
Introduction of character/setting, Shift in focus/tone/time/setting, raising tension, climax.
What are some effects structure techniques can have ?
Create sympathy for… / raise tension by… / cause the reader to ask questions about… / release tension by… (all followed by an explanation how of course).
