Q

Why are gases low density?

A

Because the particles are spread out, so the number of particles in a given volume is low

Q

What is specific latent heat? Identify the two types

A

The amount of energy that must be transferred to change 1kg of a material from one state of matter to another.
Specific latent heat of fusion - solid and liquid
Specific latent heat of vaporisation - liquid and gas

Q

What does the pressure of gas depend on? How can it be increased?

A

It depends on the motion of the particles of the gas, which exert a force at right angles to the wall.
Pressure can be increase by increasing temp, increasing mass or decreasing volume

Q

How does increasing temperature increase gas pressure?

A

The molecules have a greater kinetic energy, they move faster, there are more collisions between the molecules and the walls of the container, more force is extended on the walls, pressure is increased

Q

How does decreasing the volume of a gas increase the pressure?

A

The gas particles will collide with the walls more frequently, causing the pressure to increase

Q

Why does the pressure of a liquid increase with depth?

A

Because the further down you go in the liquid, the greater there weight of liquid there will be above

Q

What do the pressure of a liquid depend on?

A

The density of the liquid. A greater density means that more wrought will be acting downwards
