(P2)Magnetism Flashcards
Name 4 magnetic materials
Cobalt, steel, iron, nickel
What is a permanent magnet?
When a magnet has poles which are N and S all of the time (made from steel or magnadur) Produce their own magnetic field
How is an induced magnet magnetised? Give a use of a temporary magnet.
By bringing a permanent magnet near to it.
Electromagnets or circuit breakers
In a long straight conductor, what does the direction and strength of the magnetic field depend on?
Direction: direction of current
Strength: directly proportional to size of current, inversely proportional to distance from wire
What is a solenoid?
A coiled piece of wire used to produce a magnetic field, which is strong on the inside but weaker on the outside
How can the magnetic field strength inside the solenoid be increased?
Increase size of current, increase number of turns of wire on the coil, insert a magnetic material as the core
What is the motor effect?
When you put a wire (which has a magnetic field) into the magnetic field of another magnet the wire experienced a force called the motor effect
When is there no motor effect?
When the current is parallel to the magnetic field lines
How is the direction of force reversed in the motor effect?
If the current or field is reversed
What does the size of the force in the motor effect depend on?
The size of the field or current and the length of the conductor
