Motion and Forces Flashcards
What does Newton’s first law state?
A body will remain at rest or continue at a constant speed as long as the forces acting on it are balanced
What does Newton’s second law state?
Whenever a resultant force acts on a body, there will be a change in its velocity
What does Newton’s third law state?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction
The action and reaction forces act on different bodies
What causes circular motion to occur?
If it’s motion is at right angles to the centripetal force, that acts inwards along the radius of the path
How do you calculate momentum?
Mass ✖️ velocity
In a velocity time graph, what does the gradient and the area under the graph tell us?
Gradient is acceleration
Area is distance
What is the inertial mass?
A measure of how difficult it is to change the velocity of a moving object (force over acceleration)
How do you calculate weight (N) ?
Mass x gravitational field strength
