P2 - Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fusion Flashcards
What two isotopes can be used in nuclear fission?
Uranium 235.
Plutonium 239.
What is nuclear fission?
The splitting of a nucleus which releases 2 or 3 more neutrons as well.
Describe the process of nuclear fission.
A neutron is fired at the target nucleus which causes it to split open, forming two nuclei and 2 or 3 neutrons. These neutrons are absorbed by other nuclei which causes the process to repeat in a chain reaction. This process releases a lot of heat
What is the purpose of the coolant in a nuclear reactor?
To take heat energy away from the reactor to heat water and produce steam.
What is the purpose of the control rods in a nuclear reactor?
They absorb neutrons when they are lowered which allows you to control how many reactions can happen.
What is nuclear fusion?
Two small nuclei join together to make one large nucleus. This process releases a lot of energy.
Why is it experimental on earth?
It is experimental on earth due to the fact it needs temperatures of around 8 million degrees.
How do stars get their energy?
Nuclear Fusion. Two hydrogen nuclei fuse together to create helium.
