Naproxen
EC Naprosyn, Naprosyn
Max: 1250 mg/day
Advise against concurrent use with other NSAIDs (Aspirin, Ibuprofen) | Increased risk of bleed | Initial dizziness
Acyclovir
Zovirax
Herpes, Shingles, Varicella
Does not prevent herpes or other infections | patient should stay adequately hydrated (renal function) | NVD
Buccal tablet applied to upper gum on side of mouth affected | if falls within first 6 hours, place same tablet back in upper gum
Alendronate
Fosamax
Osteoporosis
Should be taken upon rising for the day | take 30 minutes before all food, drugs and supplements | do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking dose (should have food first as well)
do not suck on effervescent tablet
**follow solution with glass of water
**tablet should be taken with full glass of water
(risk of ulceration if dissolved in esophagus)
Allopurinol
Zyloprim
Gout
Report signs of skin rash or other allergies | take after meals to avoid gastric irritation | full effects may not be seen for up to 6 weeks | stay hydrated to prevent kidney stones
Amiodarone
Trade Names: Cordarone, Pacerone
Arrhythmia prophylaxis
Phototoxicity so use sunscreen/protective clothing | avoid grapefruit | take consistently with regard to meals (due to absorption) | NVD, loss of appetite
Amitriptyline
Elavil
Depression
Do not drink alcohol | advise against sudden discontinuation | may take a couple of weeks to see effects | report any suicidal ideation immediately
*should not use MAOI 14 days before starting
Amlodipine
Norvasc | CCB
Anti-hypertensive
Avoid activities requiring coordination until effects are understood, dizziness | many drug-drug interactions | peripheral edema
Amoxicillin (w/clavulanate)
Augmentin
May decrease overall effectiveness of contraceptives, use an additional form of birth control | NVD, rash
Take at beginning of meal
Dextroamphetamine/Amphetamine
Adderall
Avoid activities that require mental alertness until effects are realized | avoid taking in late afternoon/evening | report any heart problems or psychotic problems
Aspirin EC
Advise patient to report bleeding | avoid use of OTC NSAIDs
Atenolol
Tenormin | Beta-blocker
Acute MI, Hypertension
Best taken on empty stomach | advise against sudden discontinuation | avoid activities requiring mental alertness until effects are realized
Baclofen
Lioresal, Gablofen | Analgesic/Antispastic
Avoid activities requiring mental alertness until effects are realized | should not abruptly stop | avoid alcohol use
Benazepril
Lotensin | ACE Inhibitor
Cough | Seek medical attention for angiodema | avoid potassium supplements
Benzonatate
Tessalon | Anti-tussive
Swallow whole | may cause nausea, headache, dizziness or sedation
Benztropine
Cogentin | Anticholinergic
EPS, Parkinson’s
May impair heat regulation | avoid activities requiring mental alertness | report sudden muscle weakness or dyskinesia | do not drink alcohol
