Pope (head of the church)
- more authority than the bible
- pope’s word is believed to express rhe will of god
- believe he cannot be wrong on religious and ethicsl manners
Roles
- direct authority from god, who leads and inspires the pope. he makes decisions for the RCC telling all roman catholics what to do and think
- how they r chosen, elected after much prayer as cardinals believe god is helping them make a chocie. 120 cardinals must participate. there must be a 2/3 plus 1 majority to elect a new pope
Archbishop of canterbury (head if the church of england)
Roles
- spokesman for the church of england and speaks authoritatively for the faith. makn source of authority is the bible not the archbishop
- how they r chosen, work their way up from being a priest, chocsne from oen of the other archbishops
priests/viscars
- can be male female, except in the Roman Catholic Church
- roles, meet with other faith leaders and works incthe community and church. leads sermon and other religions ceremonies such as rites of passage(baptism)
- 3-4 year course at a specialised college then they become ordained

- authority is jesus. this is clear as he is part of the trinity which is god

- prophets such as abraham. they are all humans who had deeply spiritual experiences and had a calling from god
- all developed great desire to tell others and offered a new way of life based on inspiration and authority they had gainrd

- book givens special status(four gospels had to be chosen for the bible)
- writings were givdn specisl authority by being considered holy
human leaders
- christan priests were given dpecial powers after ordination
- buddhists monkes live totally different lifestyles after becoming monks. therevada buddhists believe monks are closer to enlightenment
- many trust their wellbding with them and use their advicd and teachings
reasons why leaders are important in religion
islam
- leaders are important in the community because of their learning and good rxample.
- they lead prayers in mosques
- look after pastoral needs
christianity
- leaders are trained to lead services in church, offer advice, interpret the bible
- perform baptisms weddingd and funerals in some churchs
- some have authority over other leaders
reasons why christians may or may not follow the holy books
- protestant christians believe the bible offers advice and guidance
- believed to provide a pathway through life
- modern laws are based on rules such as ten commandments
not follow the holy books
- reflections of social attitudes of that time, do not reflect modern ideas
- christian conscience would wrongly interpret some pheases
- many would use the church to tell them what the bible means
- attitudes then were based oncprejudice such as women and the rules not being flexible for new situatioms

- father, the creator and sustainer of the universe
- son, saviour who became man and lived amongst us
- holy spirit - comforter and guide. gods living presence
- god is all powerful all loving all knowing perfect and eternal
- jesus described god as forgiving, compassionate and fairhful to his promises
islam
- belief in tawhid- the belief that god is one, withoit parts or divisions, at the heart of islam
- regarding anything as allah is wqual is the worst sin, no pictures are allowed as some may worship them as idols
-allah is the creator and sustainer of all things, all powerful, all onowing, beyond human understandjng, compassionate and the master of the day of judgement
- his nature is impossible to describr? but the qur an reveals 99 qualities of allah
